Children's Services Team

This week kicked off with a great start to the rugby season – with Bath Rugby winning away at Leicester.

It was also a cause for celebration when I joined the Council’s Chief Executive, Ashley Ayre and the Chair of the Council, Cllr Cherry Beath, to thank staff and councillors involved in the recent Ofsted inspection of our Children’s Services – which rated them as ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ features – putting them in the top 20 nationally. Our Local Adoption Services were judged to be ‘Outstanding’ – the first time a Council in the South West has been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ grading in any category under the current inspection framework. So well done and thank you to everybody.

On Wednesday morning I attended a very interesting breakfast meeting with the Leaders and Mayor of our neighbouring West of England councils, the West of England Combined Authority Mayor and the Local Enterprise Partnership. We were discussing how we can all work together to ensure a more prosperous future for businesses in our area. This was followed by one of my regular monthly meetings with the West of England Mayor to talk through our shared ambitions for improved transport and infrastructure.

Yesterday I met with the new Chair of the Avon Fire Authority and the Acting Chief of Avon Fire & Rescue Service. We had a very positive discussion about how the Fire Authority is taking steps to improve its governance. I’d also like to thank our area’s firefighters for the great work they do – including providing safety advice and support to prevent the worst from happening. At the City Centre Action Group this week, we chatted about ongoing improvements for residents living in the centre of Bath. And hopefully we’ll have even more cause for celebration to round off the week when Bath take on Saracens in their first home game of the season.
