The South West Heritage Trust is to take over the provision of specialist archaeological planning advice to Bath & North East Somerset Council.

It will advise on the archaeological implications of planning proposals, an integral part of the council's development management service.  The trust will also maintain the Council’s Historic Environment Record, a database of historic sites.

The South West Heritage Trust is an independent charity committed to protecting and celebrating Somerset and Devon’s rich heritage.

Councillor Bob Goodman, cabinet member for Development and Neighbourhoods, said “We fully recognise the importance of archaeology and the historic environment within Bath and North East Somerset. We need to protect these assets at the same time as encouraging growth. The South West Heritage Trust’s team are experts in their field and we look forward to working with them to deliver this important part of our development management service.”

Tom Mayberry, Chief Executive of the South West Heritage Trust, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the council to ensure that archaeological advice is available to them when planning decisions are made.”
The Historic Environment Record can be found on the “Heritage Gateway” website at and on the “Know Your Place” site at For further details visit the trust’s website at or call 01823 278805.
