Childminder with child

A childminder is a person who is registered with OfSTED or a childminder agency to care for children under 8 years of age, usually in the childminders home, for more than two hours a day.

A Childminder can care for up to six children under the age of 8 at any one time (including their own children).  They can also care for older children as long as this is not detrimental to the care of any younger children.

Childminders are usually self-employed and choose their own working hours.  Many Childminders offer early mornings; school drop off and wrap around care, as well as full and part time places. Some Childminders can offer the Early Years Entitlement.

Childminders are inspected and regulated in the same way as all other early years providers e.g. nurseries, and they are required to meet the same statutory standards.
