Level Access Shower in Bathroom

There are various gadgets and pieces of equipment available to help you feel safer and more independent at home. If you have a sensory loss, there is specialist equipment available for people with sight or hearing loss.

You may want an emergency help device or alarm to enable you to call for emergency help if you fall or become unwell when you are alone. These kinds of devices (sometimes known as ‘telecare’ or ‘assistive technology') will reassure you and your family and friends that someone can come and help you quickly when you need assistance.

You may need some equipment to help you get around the house. If you need help to:

  • get on or off your chair, bed or toilet
  • get in and out of the bath
  • climb the stairs
  • get in and out of your home

There is plenty of equipment on the market to help you live independently in your home. A visit from an occupational therapist can help you work out what would suit your needs. This might be include a commode, a raised toilet seat, chair or bed raisers or minor alterations like rails or a small ramp. They can also advise whether you can borrow any equipment.

If you are disabled or aged over 60, you can arrange to have someone visit you at home to discuss any repairs or major building work you need. You can also get advice on applying for government grants to help pay for the work. Find out more…

Emergency help or ‘telecare’ devices help people who wish to stay in their own home but need reassurance that help is always at hand. Pressing the button on a telecare alarm and pendant will connect to the call centre in Bristol, where someone will be able to offer you help at any time of the night or day.
