Asbestos

Asbestos is common in older buildings and can be a danger to health due to the chemicals it's made from. Asbestos is only harmful if it is damaged or degraded.

It is important that you do not screw into, drill or sand asbestos material yourself. Public Health England (PHE) does not recommend the DIY removal of asbestos without advice.

Identify asbestos

Use the Health and Safety Executive's map to understand where you can expect to find asbestos.

If the asbestos is in good condition and not releasing fibres, then you should leave it alone. 

Remove and dispose of asbestos

If the asbestos is unsafe. We advise that you use a contractor with a licence to remove the asbestos. Do not screw into, drill or sand asbestos yourself. Public Health England (PHE) does not recommend the DIY removal of asbestos without advice.

Asbestos is classed as hazardous waste and must be disposed of safely. Bath and North East Somerset are able to receive small amounts of asbestos from residents. Visit our Hazardous Waste page for more information.

Asbestos at commercial properties

WarningAs a building owner or employer, you’re legally responsible for the condition of asbestos in your building and for preventing the harm of anyone within it. We can prosecute you if you don't comply with the law.

You must: 

  • Use the Health and Safety Executive's map to understand where you can expect to find asbestos
  • Identify whether asbestos is present and determine its type and condition
  • Carry out a risk assessment 
  • Decide if the work needs to be carried out by a licensed contractor
  • If the work is not licensable, decide if the work needs to be notified
  • Ensure those carrying out the work are suitably trained

It is your duty to comply with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012

Our enforcement officers carry out inspections of health and safety at commercial premises. If they find that you have not followed this law, we will take action.
