What do they look like?

The adult cluster fly is around 10mm in length. They have one set of wings that are transparent, but show a distinct vein pattern. The thorax (the middle section that the wings are attached to) have distinctive grey/olive coloured stripes and are covered in fine golden hairs. The abdomen (or the main body) is grey in colour and has a chequer-board type pattern.

How do I know I have an infestation?

Cluster fly adults emerge from the ground in late summer/early autumn. They travel in large groups to find somewhere to hibernate, and often settle for a roof void. It is because of this that they are sometimes known as ‘attic flies’. A large number of flies flying around the property, or dead flies on window sills, will be a good indication that a swarm has taken up residence in your property.

Do they do any harm?

Cluster flies present no significant risk to health, but can be a source of nuisance. Their presence should not be taken as a sign of poor hygiene, as they are merely seeking a suitably warm place to hibernate. If they are not dealt with, it is not unusual for them to return to the same property every year.

How do I get rid of them?

If you think you have cluster flies in your property, then we can provide a prompt and professional treatment. We are able to control cluster flies by treating the adult resting sites. We do not treat the larvae, as they would have flown a considerable distance from their breeding ground.

By using our service, you are assured the best treatment by fully qualified officers. All treatments used are applied by the Pest Control Officer who will ensure the safety of you and your family. We are unfortunately, unable to treat attics or loft spaces that have boilers fitted in them, for health and safety reasons.

When do you start treating for Cluster Flies?

We will treat fo cluster flies after the first frosts in the winter, this usually ensures that all the hibernating flies are together in the treatment area.

What to expect from a visit?

Prior to the visit, water tanks should be covered. We will inspect the roof space if it safe to do so and will use a ULV fog generator to eradicate any residing cluster flies. You will be advised, not to go into the loft space for at least an hour after treatment.

Following treatment, an information advice sheet is given; providing information about the poison used and contact details should you need to contact us again.

How do I prevent an infestation?

It is extremely difficult to prevent cluster flies entering a property. Fly proofing a building is not 100% effective. However, caulking around windows, and sealing obvious entry points can help.

It has been observed that a single building in a row of apparently identical buildings will be selected for clustering year after year. This is no indication of poor hygiene standards and no explanation for the phenomenon has been found.

If you are experiencing regular cluster fly problems we are able to offer treatment to destroy the current cluster fly generation.
