Electrical supplies for Christmas Lighting

Bath and North East Somerset Council is happy to work with Parish Councils, Town Councils, Residents Associations, and Chambers of Commerce to enable safe and sufficient supplies for Christmas Lighting to be installed.

Where such an approach is desired, contact with Western Power Distribution, the local electricity company, will be required at an early stage to enable the necessary agreements to be entered into and, if appropriate, for the supply of electricity through existing Bath and North East Somerset Council supply points. Where this is not practicable for safety reasons, new permanent supply pillars will be required to be installed. Approval for such supply pillars will be required from the Councils Highways Maintenance Section.

Attachment of Christmas Decorations to street lighting columns and connections for supply of electricity

Where this is required, attachments will only be granted where the street lighting columns are structurally sound and supplies are obtained by means of purpose installed time controlled plug and socket arrangements.

The capital costs of such supplies and any associated works will be fully met by the organisation proposing such an installation.

1) This Plug and socket arrangement is attached to the column and is best used to connect the electrical supply to the christmas lights.

2) This is placed within the street lighting column and will feed the Christmas light. The top section is the time control which will determine when the unit is lit.

Connection for supply of electricity to Christmas Trees

Where this is required, purpose made supply pillars will be required as previously mentioned. Approvals for such pillars will be required from the Councils Highways Maintenance Section. By installing pillars, safe low voltage lighting can be installed on the Christmas Trees. Such lighting requires the use of a step down transformer to be installed. These can be easily housed within the pillar.

The capital costs of such supplies and associated works will be fully met by the organisation proposing such an installation.

By adopting the above approaches, public safety can be maintained. Where new connections are required, sufficient lead in time should be provided. Requests after 30th September, in the year the lighting is required, will not be considered until the following year.

Where existing supplies have been previously provided, the organisation proposing installation of the lighting will be required to notify Bath and North East Somerset Council and provide a copy of their public liability insurance certificate which indemnifies the council against any loss or damage that may be caused through installation of the Christmas lighting.
