Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO) allow the Authority to prohibit access to specific public places which are subject to crime and/or anti-social behaviour. The PSPO may allow the Authority to erect physical barriers to restrict public access to a highway of which the public normally has a right of passage.  In order to make a PSPO, it must be proven that activities are persistently or continuingly being carried out via the highway and that they are having a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality.

PSPOs are made under section 59 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and they have replaced Gating Order which previously fulfilled a similar function.  In the first instance, crime and anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police and PSPOs should only be considered once all other options have been exhausted.  For further information, please contact the Council's Community Safety Officer on telephone number 01225 476420.
