Bath & North East Somerset Council as a public organisation is subject to a range of scrutiny and assessment activities in the interests of probity and value for money.

This page provides details about the main external organisations that review and inspect the services provided by Bath & North East Somerset Council.  There are also links to their websites so you can search for inspection reports and performance information. 

Audit Commission

The Audit Commission is an independent public body whose responsibility includes working with local authorities and their partners to improve services for local people. This is done through audit, inspection and research activities.  However, the new government has announced its plans to disband the Audit Commission, and that their intention is to have new arrangements in place for auditing England's public bodies by 2012/13.

Ofsted

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It contributes to the provision of better education and care through effective inspection and regulation.  This is achieved through a comprehensive system of inspection and regulation covering childcare, schools, colleges, children's services, teacher training and youth work.  Ofsted lead on the inspection of schools and Children’s Social Care Services within Bath & North East Somerset. 

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.  It regulates care provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies and voluntary organisations.  It aims to make sure better care is provided for everyone - in hospitals, care homes and people's own homes.  It also seeks to protect the interests of people whose rights are restricted under the Mental Health Act.
