Check your vehicle and pay the charge

You may need to pay a daily charge to drive in Bath's Clean Air Zone if your vehicle does not meet emission standards.

Charges do not apply to cars or motorbikes unless it is a taxi or private hire vehicle.

Bath has a class C clean air zone, which means that charges only apply to taxis, private hire vehicles, vans (including pick-ups and some camper vans), light goods vehicles, buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards.

Charges are based on the type of vehicle you drive and its emission standard. You will need to pay for a chargeable vehicle regardless of whether you are using it privately or commercially.

Check your vehicle online

Using the GOV.UK Drive in a Clean Air Zone Service, you can check whether you will need to pay to drive your vehicle in Bath's Clean Air Zone based on its emission standards and using your registration number.

Check your vehicle

Warning The GOV.UK Drive in a Clean Air Zone Service only checks vehicles that are registered in the UK. However, charges will apply to any non-compliant, chargeable vehicle travelling in the zone, even if it is registered outside the UK - except private cars and motorbikes.

The data accuracy of this service is always improving. Please also refer to the required emission standards below. If you think the result you have received is incorrect, please contact the support team at GOV.UK.

What are the required emission standards?

Compliant vehicles (no charge)

  • Euro 6/VI diesel vehicles (or newer)
  • Euro 4/IV petrol vehicles (or newer)
  • Fully electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
  • All hybrid vehicles
  • Modified or retrofitted vehicles registered with the Energy Saving Trust’s Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)

Non-compliant vehicles (charges apply)

  • Pre Euro 6/VI diesel vehicles (this means Euro 1 to 5/IV or earlier)
  • Pre Euro 4/IV petrol vehicles (this means Euro 1 to 3 or earlier)

These vehicles, including non-UK vehicles, will be charged in Bath's Clean Air Zone (except private cars and motorbikes).

Pay for your journey

If you drive a car or motorbike you do not need to pay the charge, unless it is a taxi or private hire vehicle.

  • Daily charges apply 24 hours a day (midnight to midnight), 7 days a week, all year round when entering or driving in Bath’s Clean Air Zone.
  • You can pay up to 6 days in advance, on the day the vehicle is driven in the zone, or in the following 6 days.
  • Because charges apply daily, you can enter or leave the zone on multiple occasions each day you pay a charge.
  • If you drive in the zone across two days, for example before midnight and after midnight, you will need to pay two daily charges.
  • Charges do not apply if a vehicle is parked in the zone, but does not move.

WarningYou must pay the charge within 7 days (including the day of travel) otherwise a penalty charge notice will be issued. For example, if you drive in on a Monday, the following Sunday is the last day you can pay before a penalty charge notice is issued. You will not receive a reminder and Auto Pay is not available.

Payment is made by credit card or debit card on a pay-as-you-go basis at GOV.UK’s Drive in a Clean Air Zone Service unless you are registered for a local discount (if so, see below).

Pay for your journey

You can set up a business user account at GOV.UK to help you check multiple vehicles, assign account managers and set up an agreement to pay by bank account. You are still required to declare your journeys online within 6 days.

You can pay for discounted journeys or log exempt journeys up to 6 days in advance, on the day the vehicle is driven in the zone or in the following 6 days. You must pay for or log your journey within 7 days (including the day of travel) or you will receive a penalty charge notice.
