community defibrillator

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been working in partnership with the Community Heartbeat Trust on a programme of installations of  in Bath and its environs, outlying areas such as Radstock and Midsomer Norton, and right out into the smaller villages in the rural areas.

As at February 2017 we now have 50 devices installed, and a further 11 are planned. Funds have been raised within the community; and some Elected Members have used their Ward Councillors Initiative funding to invest into the defibrillator programme.

Our installations are located on a variety of buildings: churches, doctors’ surgeries, supermarkets, local convenience stores, public houses and adopted telephone kiosks. See the list of sites below.

Each case has a number pad on it; when the ambulance service receives a 999 call they are able to identify the nearest device by postcode, give the caller the code and ask the caller to go and bring the device to the patient. The first responder or the paramedics will take over at their arrival.

These machines are made to be used by any member of the community, as they talk the user through the defibrillation process. A defibrillator cannot harm anybody, if the patient is not in cardiac arrest, the machine will identify this and the user will not proceed with defibrillation.
