If you, or a member of your household, has a disability which means you need to park directly outside your home, we may be able to create a disabled parking bay for you.
The purpose of the bay is to deter other people from leaving their cars in this location, as it informs them of your need for nearby parking, to stay independent. You can make a request for a new disabled parking bay, or to have an existing bay repainted, below.
Restrictions and recommendations you should consider
- Any disabled bay that we create for you will be 'advisory' only. This means that we cannot enforce parking controls on the bay, even if someone without a Blue Badge uses it. You will have to rely on the goodwill of other drivers to leave the space clear for you.
- Reserving a bay for your use may affect your neighbours. We recommend discussing your request with them, and taking account of any concerns they have. If you consult them first, they are more likely to understand your need for this facility, and to respect your sole use of the bay if we do create one.
- We cannot create bays where they would have a negative effect on road safety, such as near a junction, on a bend or where the road is already narrow.
- It will not be possible to create a new bay in an area where a large number of disabled or reserved bays already exist, or where there are already parking restrictions in place (such as double yellow lines).
Eligibility
To qualify for an advisory disabled parking bay near your home, or the repaint of an existing bay, your circumstances must satisfy all of the following conditions:
- You must have a current Blue Badge.
- You must be a car owner or driver, or live with one.
- You should not have off-street parking on your property, such as a driveway or garage. If you have these facilities, you will need to explain to us why you are unable to use them.
- The road where you are requesting the bay must be an adopted public highway. We cannot generally install parking bays on private roads.
Before you apply
To apply, you will need:
- your Blue Badge number
- details of how your disability affects your ability to park or get to and from your car
- a recent proof of your (or your driver's) address, such as a utility bill dated within the last six months
- the vehicle registration V5 document, to show that you or someone in your household owns a car
- a photo of the existing disabled bay if you are applying for a bay to be repainted
Next steps
We will aim to make a decision about your application and notify you of the result within six weeks. Please ensure you have provided all of the information requested on this page and the application form. If we need to contact you for additional information, this may delay your application.
