Apply to place a cherry picker or mobile crane on the highway

You may want to place a cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail on the highway to help you complete construction work safely. Use this page to apply for the licence you will need to do this.

The licence is valid for 28 days. To keep a cherry picker, oversail, or mobile crane on the highway beyond this period of time, you will need to renew the licence.

If you need a road to be closed to enable the cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail to be placed on the highway, you will also need to apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) which will require an additional 8 week notice period.

Fees

Fees will be calculated as you apply using the online form.

Payment will be taken online when you apply.

If your application relates to filming activities or an event, VAT is chargeable and you will be invoiced for the licence fee and VAT.

WarningFurther administration fees will be charged for payment/document chases (£12.84 per chase) and non-compliant inspections (£58.85 per inspection).

Please note that all charges are administration charges and are non-refundable, irrespective of whether a licence is granted or not.

What happens next

When we have received your application, one of our Street Works Inspectors will check your proposed location to make sure it's safe and suitable. We will then let you know if we can grant your licence request or not.

If your application is successful and you are granted a licence, the cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail must not be placed on the highway before the agreed placement date.
