You may want to place a cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail on the highway to help you complete construction work safely. Use this page to apply for the licence you will need to do this.
The licence is valid for 28 days. To keep a cherry picker, mobile crane on the highway beyond this period of time, you will need to renew the licence.
If you need a road to be closed to enable the cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail to be placed on the highway, you will also need to apply for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) which will require an additional 8 week notice period.
Fees
Fees will be calculated as you apply using the online form.
Payment will be taken online when you apply.
If your application relates to filming activities or an event, VAT may be charged and you will be invoiced for later payment.
Before you start
Before you complete the application, please have the following items and information ready:
- The address of your proposed location of the cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail
- Width of the existing carriageway at proposed location
- Vehicle weight and dimensions
- Name of vehicle controller and operative
- The date you require the licence to start from
- A site plan
- Permission from Parking Services if the proposed location currently has parking restrictions (such as a parking bay or resident's parking zone)
- Current public liability insurance cover, with a £5 million indemnity limit
- A credit or debit card to pay for the licence

What happens next
When we have received your application, one of our Highways Inspectors will check your proposed location to make sure it's safe and suitable. We will then let you know if we can grant your licence request or not.
If your application is successful and you are granted a licence, the cherry picker, mobile crane or oversail must not be placed on the highway before the agreed placement date.
