The amount of Council Tax you have to pay will depend on the number of adults in your household, and the Council Tax valuation band of your property.
To learn more about how Council Tax is made up and what it pays for, please see What is Council Tax? or this example bill, which explains what the different parts of your Council Tax bill mean.
How Council Tax banding works
The exact amount of Council Tax you have to pay will vary from year to year, and area to area, but unless you make substantial changes to your home, your Council Tax band should remain the same.

There are eight Council Tax property value bands, A (lowest), to H (highest), with Band D representing a midpoint of a typical family home. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA), which is part of HM Revenue & Customs, not the council, decides on the appropriate band for every property in the UK. In England, this is based on the VOA's estimate of what the property was worth on 1st April 1991.
Band | Value |
---|---|
A | Up to £40,000 |
B | £40,001 to £52,000 |
C | £52,001 to £68,000 |
D | £68,001 to £88,000 |
E | £88,001 to £120,000 |
F | £120,001 to £160,000 |
G | £160,001 to £320,000 |
H | £320,000 or more |
Check your Council Tax Band
Council Tax band valuations take into account the size, layout and location of your property. If you don't know which band your property is in, you can find out by using the GOV.UK Council Tax band postcode search. Just type in your postcode, and select your property.
Challenge your band valuation
If you think your property is in the wrong Council Tax band, you can make an appeal to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). They will tell you how your Council Tax band has been worked out.
You will need to provide evidence to support your claim, such as the band values of similar properties in your local area. To collect this evidence, you can use the following tools:
If the VOA agree that your band valuation is wrong, they will give you a new banding, we will update your Council Tax bill, and all future bills will be based on this new banding. You do not have to pay for this Council Tax band review service.
You must continue to pay your Council Tax at the current rate while appealing against your current band valuation. If your appeal is successful, we will refund any Council Tax that you have overpaid. It is important to note that the review process could result in your band valuation going up, not down.
For further information about making an appeal against your banding, please visit the GOV.UK website or contact your local Valuation Office Agency:

When we talk about the normal full Council Tax charge for an area, we are referring to the amount that a household in Band D will have to pay. We calculate the bill for other households in the area in relation to the charge for Band D. The charge is calculated as a multiple of 'ninths' of the Band D charge.
Band | Charge |
---|---|
A | 6/9th (or 66.7%) |
B | 7/9th (or 77.8%) |
C | 8/9th (or 88.9%) |
D | x one (or 100%) = the standard Council Tax charge for the area |
E | 11/9th (or 122%) |
F | 13/9th (or 144.4%) |
G | 15/9th (or 166.7%) |
H | x 2 (or 200%) |
For example, if the Band D charge for an area is £1800:
1/9th of the Band D charge is £200
A household in Band A will pay 6/9th (= 6 x £200) - £1200
A household in Band F will pay 13/9th (=13 x £200) - £2600
