Driver responsibilities
If a vehicle is designated as wheelchair-accessible, the driver must provide the following assistance, where necessary:
- carrying passengers in wheelchairs
- carrying wheelchairs into the vehicle, if passengers choose to sit in a passenger seat
- ensuring that passengers are carried in safety and reasonable comfort
- giving passengers as much 'mobility assistance' as reasonably required
Mobility assistance
Mobility assistance means helping passengers by providing physical help.
If a passenger wants to remain in a wheelchair, the driver must help the passenger get into and out of the vehicle.
If a passenger wants to transfer to a seat, the driver must help the passenger get out of the wheelchair, into the vehicle, and back into the wheelchair at the final destination.
Medical exemptions
Drivers must carry out the duties listed above unless they are medically unable to do so and we have granted them an exemption. Drivers that have an exemption must display this in their licensed vehicle.
Guide dogs and assistance dogs
Taxi drivers must allow guide dogs and assistance dogs when driving any licensed vehicle.
Report a taxi driver
If you think a taxi driver has charged you extra for being a wheelchair user, or has not provided appropriate assistance, you can report a taxi driver online
