Local School Nature Grants

Non-grant awards of up to £500 are available to provide outdoor learning, training and equipment for schools and early years providers in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Learning Through Landscapes Trust's Local School Nature Grants programme aims to promote outdoor learning among young children by awarding early years providers and schools in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) with a budget of up to £500 for outdoor resources and training.

Please note that Learning through Landscapes does not provide cash grants.  Successful applicants will be expected to purchase products from the Local School Nature Grants product catalogue.

The programme offers:

  • £500 worth of products
  • NEW For 2024! - an additional Climate Curriculum Pack valued at £150.
  • 4 hours of CPD (Continuing Professional Development)on your setting’s site, broken down as follows:
    • 2 hours of CPD on the topic chosen from the LSNG (Local School Nature Grants) training list for any adults from your setting.  This is an opportunity for the staff to benefit, not just the lead applicant.  This part of the offer is perhaps more valuable than the products, the value lies in the skills and understanding that this part of the award offers.  This is not a visit to look at potential physical changes to your site, it will look at how you use your existing space to teach the curriculum outdoors.  Your trainer will be in touch before the session to discuss the content.
    • 2 hours on site on the same day to undertake Learning Through Landscape’s Climate Ready School Grounds digital tool.  This will generate a report on how your school grounds can be improved, particularly from a climate perspective.  Click here to find out more information about this.
  • 1 years' membership to Learning through Landscapes. This sees access to exclusive discounts, offers and outdoor learning resources.
  • 3 webinars on a variety of topics, and
  • A plaque from the players of the People's Postcode Lottery to display in your setting's reception area.

Awards can be used to purchase outdoor materials from the Local School Nature Grants catalogue such as (please note this is not an exclusive list):

  • Bee and insect hotels.
  • Bird boxes.
  • Gardening tools.
  • Outdoor clothing for children and adults, such as wellington boots, and
  • Wildlife watching kits, including outdoor cameras.

Applications must come from early years groups or schools.  Applications from Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), ‘Friends of’ groups and governors are not eligible.

Further information, guidance and an application form can be found on the Learning Through Landscapes website.

The next deadline for applications is Friday 8 November 2024.  Decisions on grant awards are normally made within 2-3 weeks.
