The Sir Halley Stewart Trust

Small Grants up to £5,000 and Main Grants of up to £60,000 (occasionally up to £80,000) over 1-3 years are available to UK registered charities and educational institutions for innovative and pioneering Social, Medical and Religious projects, both in the UK and internationally, that prevent suffering and enable people to flourish.

The Trust, which is underpinned by Christian values, but welcomes applications from other faith and non-faith projects, places a particular focus on supporting innovative research projects and new pioneering development projects, primarily through the provision of salary costs.

It funds Medical, Social and Religious projects, with Education being a theme that runs across all three grant-making areas.

Please note that all prospective applicants are advised to contact the Trust’s Clerk via its Expression of Interest form to explore the suitability of a project and the best time to apply, before starting an application.

Main grants programme

  • Large multi-year grants, where the Trust will be a sole or major funder
  • Between £5,001 and £60,000 in total, although in rare and exceptional cases grants of up to £80,000 may be considered
  • Spread across one, two or three years, with a £30,000 maximum per annum
  • Normally given in the form of a salary contribution or to fund an entire project
  • Main Grant applications are considered at Trustee meetings that take place three times per year, in June, October and February

Small grants programme

One-off grants for small projects, where the Trust will be a sole or major funder

  • Up to £5,000, which should cover the entire project or be the major funding contribution. The total project should cost no more than £5,000
  • Usually aimed at small scoping or pilot projects
  • A limited number of Small grants are awarded each year
  • Small Grant applications are considered all year round and there are no application deadlines

The Trust’s Main Grants programme usually has three application deadlines each year.  The next deadline is on Thursday 21 November 2024 for its meeting in February 2025.  Please note that the Main Grants fund may close earlier than the November deadline if it becomes oversubscribed.
