Small Grants Programme

Revenue grants of between £2,000 and £9,000 are available to individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK or Japan to promote and support interaction between the two countries.

The charitable objectives of the Daiwa Foundation are:

  • The advancement of the education of the citizens of the United Kingdom and the citizens of Japan in each other’s institutions, business organisation, economy, culture, heritage, history and scientific achievements.
  • The award of scholarships or maintenance allowances to enable students and academics at schools, colleges and universities in the United Kingdom or Japan to travel abroad to pursue their education, and
  • To make grants to institutions having exclusively charitable objects which are engaged in promoting, for the public benefit, education in the United Kingdom or Japan, or research into cultural, historical, medical and scientific subjects and the publication of the useful results of all such research.

The Daiwa Foundation’s overarching aim is to support closer links between the United Kingdom and Japan by:

  • Awarding grants and scholarships in all fields of activity.
  • Supporting educational exchanges and other bilateral initiatives between UK and Japanese academics and students, and by
  • Organising a year-round events’ programme at Daiwa Foundation Japan House in London to increase understanding of Japanese culture in the UK.

The Foundation’s Small Grants programme can cover all fields of activity, including (please note this is not an exclusive list):

  • Educational and grassroots exchanges.
  • Research travel, and
  • The organisation of conferences, exhibitions, and other projects and events that fulfil this broad objective.
  • Grants of between £2,000 and £9,000 are available, although a Small Grant award is typically for between £3,000 and £4,000.

An element of matched funding is required as the Foundation’s awards rarely cover an application’s full project budget.  Its grants are intended as a part contribution to the proposed project.

There are two application deadlines each year, as follows:

  • 31 March (for a decision by 31 May), and
  • 30 September (for a decision by 30 November).

The Foundation encourages applicants to submit their application as early as possible and is happy to provide advice about possible applications by email.

UK-based applicants should apply online.  Further information, guidance and a Small Grant online application form is available on the Foundation’s website.
