Planning application - local requirement
When the requirement applies
A noise assessment, prepared by a qualified acoustician, is necessary for all applications where the proposed development is likely to cause significant noise which will affect others, or those using the new development may be sensitive to noise caused by other people or activities (for example, residential developments, schools and hospitals).
Typical examples where a noise assessment will be necessary include the following:
- Change of use to commercial uses such as a shop or takeaway, close to residential areas
- New residential development on or near transport-related noise sources such as road classified as A or B, rail or air transport
- New residential development close to pubs, cafes and restaurants
- Change of use to residential uses/li>
- New commercial developments such as offices, warehouses or factories, close to residential areas
What the assessment should include
The assessment should outline the potential sources of noise generation, and how these may have a negative effect on local amenity (the ability of people to enjoy their homes, or local facilities). The assessment should also demonstrate how the developer intends to overcome these issues.
