Prize gaming permits

If you want to hold a prize draw and you do not have a gambling premises licence, you need to apply for a prize gaming permit.

Prize gaming permits are for small-scale prize draws where an organiser will put up modest prizes for small participation fees. This is different from prize draws where the stakes of participants make up the winnings.

Before you apply

You need to read and understand the requirements on this page before you submit an application for a permit. We cannot proceed with your application unless you give us all the information we need.

This permit is for small prize draws. You can hold a variety of games as part of your prize draw, so long as the value of the prizes does not exceed the prize value limit.

Prize value limits

Prizes offered as part of a small prize draw must meet the following conditions:

  • The maximum value of any one prize is £70
  • The total value of prizes cannot be more than £500

Participation fees

The amount you charge participants for entry must meet the following conditions:

  • The participation fee for any one chance to win a prize must not exceed £1
  • The total amount of participation fees for any one chance to win a prize cannot be more than £500

Eligibility

To be eligible for a prize gaming permit, you must:

  • be aged 18 years or over
  • occupy or plan to occupy the relevant premises

You do not need to have an operating licence from the Gambling Commission to apply.

If you hold a gambling premises licence or a club gaming permit, you may not apply for a prize gaming permit.
