Problems we can help with
We can help with the following types of problem:
- Poor hygiene standards in a food premises, stall or shop
- Food poisoning, where it seems likely the food premises was the source
- Food on sale beyond its use by date, unfit to eat, or containing foreign bodies
- Allergen-related concerns, including information given by staff, signage, labelling and packaging
- Inaccurate or misleading description and labelling of food
- Whistleblowing concerns about how a food business is operating
Problems we can't help with
We cannot investigate issues which concern your satisfaction as a customer, rather than your safety. For example:
- Slow, rude or poor service
- Discrimination in the provision of service
- Disappointing food quality
- Unreasonable pricing or portion sizes
- Claims for compensation or refunds
For these consumer issues, we recommend contacting the food business directly in the first instance, and if they cannot or will not resolve the issue, Citizen's Advice Bureau.
We're also unable to help if the way that you've stored, handled or prepared a food has probably caused the problem (such as consuming after a use by date, not cooking meat thoroughly or mixing up chopping boards between raw meat and other foods).
The information we'll need
For any report, you'll need to provide the following things. Please collect them before starting the report process.
- Details of the business
- A short summary of the issue
- Any evidence that you have collected (such as photographs of premises, dishes or food packaging and labels, and the food itself, if it is practical to keep it)
- Your name and contact details
How to make your report
By phone
Reporting by phone is best for emergencies only, where we need to act immediately, such as:
- an ongoing outbreak of food poisoning such as E-Coli
- an incident which could cause serious injury, such as finding glass in your food
- toxic contamination of a popular food, such as a supermarket product
- anything that could harm a lot of people fast, and needs urgent action
Online
For non-emergency reports only, reporting online is the most efficient way to help us to deal with the problem, and let you know of any action we take to resolve it.
