The governing body must appoint a member of staff who is responsible for the educational achievement of both looked-after children and previously looked-after children. This person is known as the designated teacher.
It is the governing body’s responsibility to ensure that the designated teacher has appropriate training and that both governors and the designated teacher are aware of guidance issued by the Secretary of State.
Schools should also have an allocated governor for looked-after children and previously looked-after children. This governor should liaise closely with the designated teacher.
Statutory guidance
All designated teachers must read and abide by two essential pieces of statutory guidance. These outline the responsibilities for looked-after children and previously looked-after children.
You can access both pieces of guidance on our statutory guidance page
