- chemical substances and preparations, like solvents
- gases
- asbestos
- radioactive substances
What counts as contaminated land
Land is legally defined as ‘contaminated land’ where substances are causing or could cause harm to:
- people
- property
- animals
- plants
- lakes and rivers
Before you report it
Before you report contaminated land, you will need the following information:
- Your name, address, telephone number and email address
- The address or a brief description of the location you are reporting
- The way the nuisance affects you and the environment

Next steps
After you have reported the potentially contaminated land to us, we will contact you within two working days to discuss the problem.
We have a legal duty to inspect land in the district for contamination. We will send an officer to inspect potentially contaminated land once we have received your report.
If we confirm that the land is contaminated following an inspection, we will take the necessary action to ensure that the land is cleaned.
