National heritage organisations & amenity societies

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings offer unique training schemes, courses, advice, and research to help shape landscapes with sensitivity, and protect old buildings at risk.

Bath Preservation Trust is a charity promoting high standards of planning and architecture in Bath, striving to ensure the future success of our special heritage city through conservation, education, and museums.

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation offers a range of advice and guidance.

Historic England has a variety of information, guidance, and advice on maintaining England's historic buildings.

Historic Environment Scotland is the lead public body set up to investigate, care for, and promote Scotland’s historic environment.

The Ancient Monument Society promotes the study and conservation of ancient monuments, historic buildings and fine old craftsmanship.

The Georgian Group is an English and Welsh conservation organisation created to campaign for the preservation of historic buildings and planned landscapes of the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Victorian Society is a charity dedicated to championing England and Wales' Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

Registers & directories

buildingconservation.com has a directory of products and services that can be useful when looking at historic building conservation and repair.

The Institute of Conservation's Conservation Register lets you search for professionally qualified conservator-restorers in the UK and Ireland, search by object, material or specialism, and even search for someone to help with plans, testing, monitoring, and other services.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) offers a find a surveyor service for both residential and commercial poroperties.

The Royal Institute of British Architects provides a number of services that might be useful. These include a find an architect service and a conservation register to help you find conservation specialists.

The Institute of Historic Building Conservation also provide Historic Environment Service Provider Recognition (HESPR), which is a directory of authoritative conservation businesses and their expert advice.

Sustainable construction and retrofitting guidance

Climate Change and Your Home provides the Green & Low Carbon Construction Directory, which is an environmentally friendly construction industry search.

Further retrofitting guidance is available on the Energy at Home website, which will provide information for all available funding assistance and grant schemes for retrofitting. As we develop our approach to retrofit, we will include looking at street-by-street retrofitting, and information and signposting will be made available through these webpages.

The Energy Saving Trust offers independent and impartial advice about energy and water saving solutions.

FutureBuild is the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment.

The Green Register is a register of sustainable construction professionals in the South West.

Low Impact Living Initiative has a variety of fact sheets and information on retrofitting.

The National Insulation Association can help you find an accredited insulation installer locally.

The National Microgeneration Scheme is a national quality assurance certification scheme for microgeneration products and installation.

Planning Portal is the UK government’s online planning regulation and building resource. Find out if you need planning permission, apply for planning permission, or use the interactive house features, including terrace and semi-detached, for advice on common householder projects including microgeneration.

The Sustainable Traditional Building Alliance has produced a guide on responsible retrofit of traditional buildings.

Transition Bath is a Bath based group increasing awareness of climate change and planning changes to deal take action at a local level.

Bath Preservation Trust and the Centre for Sustainable Energy have produced Warmer Bath which is an informative local guide to improving energy efficiency of traditional homes in the city of Bath.
