Get a Clean Air Zone refund

Refunds are only available in the following circumstances. Expand each section to find out more.

You can apply for a refund if you have paid for a journey in advance, but then choose not to enter the zone on that day.

You must apply for a refund before the journey date. We cannot give refunds on the day of travel or afterwards.

We will make any refund using the same payment method that you paid the charge with. A £2.50 administration fee will be deducted from your refund for each vehicle and for each daily charge that you cancel.

Warning If you have booked a discounted journey in advance using MiPermit, please cancel it before the date of travel, using MiPermit. No payment will be taken until the date of travel.

Before you start

You will need:

  • your vehicle registration number
  • the date of travel

Apply for a refund

If your vehicle details are incorrect or ‘not found’ on the GOV.UK vehicle checker you should contact Clean Air Zone Support:

Unless advised otherwise, you should still pay the charge within 7 days if you have driven or you are planning to drive in the zone.

Once you have updated your details with the DVLA and you have established that your vehicle meets the required emission standards and/or is not chargeable, you can apply to us for a refund for the payments you have already made for this vehicle to drive in the zone.

Please remember to keep proof of payment and receipts.

For help, or if you think there are exceptional circumstances that justify a refund, email caz_businesssupport@bathnes.gov.uk.

If you have an approved local exemption from B&NES Council, you do not need to contact Clean Air Zone Support and you do not need to pay the charge.

We are receiving regular reports in the rise of a number of unofficial third-party payment websites purporting to be council or government payment sites, some of which use unsolicited text messages or phone calls to claim drivers need to pay a charge.

These websites can cause compliant drivers to pay a CAZ charge they did not incur or were required to pay as well as lead owners of non-compliant vehicles to receive a PCN after making a CAZ payment. This is because the unofficial sites fail to pay the daily charge on your behalf.

If you need to pay a fine, please visit our official webpage.

The Government’s Clean Air Zones website is the only one which can check if vehicles are compliant and collect payment if required.

Please review your receipt to confirm that payment has been made via the official webpage before submitting a refund request. Unfortunately, we are not able to refund any payments made via an unofficial payment website and we would advise you to contact them directly to request a refund.

If you still believe that you are due a refund, please email caz_businesssupport@bathnes.gov.uk outlining why you believe a refund is due. You must attach a copy of your receipt.
