Somer Valley Links (SVL) proposes major improvements to the bus infrastructure across the corridors. This includes both new and upgraded bus stops, as well as added bus lanes to the network for public transport priority.
In B&NES, 92% of nitrogen dioxide emissions are from road traffic. By providing more travel options, like catching the bus and making it an attractive option, will improve air quality and reduce congestion on the network.
SVL aims to make it easier and more convenient to catch the bus to reach a destination through better bus stops, priority for buses and the creation of mobility hubs.
This will include upgrades for 22 bus stops and 0.8km of new bus lanes.
The improvements include ensuring these locations have a high-quality stand with seating and real time information. There are also improvements proposed around the bus stops, ensuring there are safe crossing points to access the bus stops, and the footways are of high quality.
The proposals include improvements to improve seven bus stop pairs. In addition to upgrading the stop itself, the proposals include:
- Rogers Close, Clutton – widened footways, a new signalised crossing over A37 and improvements to the pedestrian crossing at Rogers Close.
- Smallcombe Road, Clandown – widened footways, reduction in speed limit to 30mph, new signalised crossing point over A367 Bath Road, cycle stands and a speed limit reduction from 40mph to 30mph.
- Red Post, Peasedown St John – widened footways, reduction in speed limit to 20mph, new zebra crossing point over Bath Road and improved cycle access to Wellow Lane.
- A39 White Cross, Hallatrow – widened footways and signalised crossings over A37 and A362.
- The Beeches, Odd Down - widened footways at certain locations, improved crossing points over The Beeches and Oolite Road and upgrading the zebra crossing to a signalised crossing.
- Devonshire Buildings, Bath – widened footways and improved crossing points of Devonshire Buildings and Devonshire Villas.
- Oldfield Road, Bath – widened footways, a new signalised crossing point over A367 Wells Road and improved crossing facilities over Upper Oldfield Park and Haysfield Park.
In addition, we are proposing bus lanes at the following locations:
These sections of bus lanes will help to improve bus journey time on average by up to three minutes (from Odd Down to Churchill Gyratory) for buses and two minutes for general traffic. It will also greatly improve reliability along the corridor.
- A short bus lane on the A367 north exit of Odd Down roundabout
- A 550-metre bus lane towards Bath along the Wellsway between the Wayside bus stops, northeast of Midford Road, to Hatfield Road.
- An increase in the bus lane on the A367 approach to Churchill Gyratory
